How a Coffee Mug is Made

How a Coffee Mug is Made

If I had a dime for every time someone asked me if what I did was like the movie Ghost, I’d be rich! Creating pottery on a potter’s wheel is easy to relate to; you have tried it, seen it on TV, or know someone that has done it. I no longer make my work on a potter’s wheel. I use a process called slip casting. It’s difficult to explain and I get a lot of questions about how it actually works. It’s a process used in industry from everything to making toilets to cow pitchers. I made a short video to show you how a coffee mug is made. I want to tell you that the casting slip (liquid clay) sits in the mold 25 minutes before I pour it out, in the video it looks like I fill the molds and dump them right out. There was a 25 minute time lapse. I also have to let the molds sit upside down to dry for 25 minutes before I clean up the tops of the molds. All will be explained in the video, which is under three minutes, although the process takes much longer.

Hopefully this video clears up some confusion about how a coffee mug is made by slip casting. If not, let me know if you have anymore questions about the process.
